(Chapter 4 of In the Leadership Mode)

This chapter teases out the distinction between leadership and management as different yet mutually balancing modes of action for dealing with challenges. I propose that management-mode action often ‘eclipses’ leadership and that the two modes need to be interwoven. While In the Leadership Mode was published back in 2008, I haven’t much changed my framing of leadership since then, nor of the leadership – management relationship. In 2019, I made this chapter available to members of the International Leadership Association for teaching and research purposes. Now, I’ve decided to make it more widely available. While the chapter can be read largely as a standalone piece, some of the ideas presented do build on content earlier in the book.
